An ancient Spruce tree near my house……
A Voice in the Wilderness
....not a Bill Gates or Elon Musk,
....not a billionaire nor a tech wizard..
....wouldn't want to be.
Just a voice in the wilderness guarding the Western door, watching over the Green Water People and the great green tall standing ones...the ancient evergreen forests. Pushing back against invasions of ideas on how to exploit it. Doing what I can to help the connection to what may be important to life and living...for what kind of world would it be with no whales, no salmon, bears, wolves or evergreen forests or fresh clear water and songbirds?
The songbirds are singing, excited for spring. One song sparrow I call "Senior Juicy", for that is what she says very clearly as part of her welcoming spring song. Every year she heralds spring as the buds come out. I wonder what they are all saying to each other and if they have the same song anywhere else. It always makes me smile when I hear her.
These days are a big change from what life was like a year ago. Many people are struggling to stay afloat after so many businesses have shut down or are barely making it. A lot of people are out of work or loking for new ways to make a living. Outdorr activities and essential sercices continue to manage but other changes like extreme climate effects are taking their toll. I am going with the flow, wondering what comes next in this unpredictable scenario but I am upgrading my year round garden just in case. Seeds are precious.
What is my business? Well nature, art and beauty, power and energy absorb me. This global situation has slowed me down somewhat...socially especially. Isolation has given me the freedom from some of the demands of our collective society and changed what I previously deemed important. I hope that the world finds what is truly valuable like health, family, friends, environment and the natural world with all its beauty and wildlife.
I love art and that is what I studied and what I do amongst other things in order to survive. Over the years, in taking on environmental issues, I had to look at myself and what effects I was making on the natural world around me. I did big metal hanging sculptures and artwork, both for public buildings and for private homes. I switched over to driftwood and natural materials offered by the Earth and that I would find in my lifestyle of going to wild, remote places.
I still do some metal work but now I am just using up my scrap materials or discarded metals to create the pieces. I find metal beautiful, the way it works with light and colors but I don't like the mining, drilling, blasting and pollution that goes with it.
So here are a few of my pieces...
Honoring the Wild Salmon….(at the Wickaninnish Inn near Tofino)….
These pieces are in the Royal Bank of Canada Convention Centre in Winnipeg….
These pieces are a private commission….
From a show I had in New York….
I will be putting more of my work in upcoming posts. Thank You!
never ever will I forget the day you, Steve and family presented me with the most exquisite driftwood hanging. I spend a lot of time just staring up at it in wonder. And when the evening sunset bounces off the metal piece at Sobo I overwhelmed with its beauty. So much appreciation for you and your talents. Lets drum and howl at the next full moon my dear friend
