When the internet and computers became available to people in remote areas, I thought that the world could be changed because the values of living close to the Earth would be brought to humans globally....But I was wrong and over the years, it seems that there is even more of a disconnect. I am not sure if people living out on the land got absorbed into the mainstream or just ignored and avoided getting involved altogether. I remember some people throwing computers out the window and a firend even set his up on the beach and shot it with his gun, esecuted it so to speak. But here we are, in a big global mess, caught up in it altogether, like it or not and there's a lot to learn from and in this situation.
It is not good to put your eggs all in one basket they say, but while we have it (the internet), we might as well use it. This world needs to change if we are to have a future, so after trying to escape it for so long, or to, at least, avoid the downside of it all, I am bringing the wild to you.
It is Feb. 5th, Valentine's coming up, new buds and shoots coming up. I am waiting for the herring to migrate through' laying their eggs on the eel grass underwater, followed by the grey whales, sea lions, eagles and more, all hungry for the feast.
Last year, in March, with few boats out on the water, people staying at home in lockdown because of Covid, few tourists, less sewage and little noise of jets and other traffic, the herring came back after many years away, and with them came the whales. I am waiting to see if they will reappear again this year. I have heard frogs croaking, early, but they say when the frogs start croaking, the herring are moving in. It has been a mild winter so far here on the coast...rhubarb in the garden has continued to grow with little frost. We will see, things seem so unpredictable at this time. I have never experienced anything like this not knowing what might happen next.
There have been some cougar sightings in the area across the water lately. When checking the beach for tracks, I saw that two deer had bounded away from something very quickly. It is mating season and it could be the females running from the males. I am cautious though, cougars are like ghosts. A friend was attacked several years ago on a neighboring island, she survived thankfully but I carry a sharp knife and other weapons sometimes to level the playing field.
I hear a baby otter chirping for its mother out there somewhere in the night. Nice to have them around, Otters hold female medicine. The raccoons are fighting away up in a big tree, a male and female.
Spring is on its way here in Canada.
Nice to see this! I want to see more, please. David Blount-Porter +1 415 235 9510
