“The Sacred Hoop”
First of July, Canada Day, and Fourth of July, Independence Day in the USA are usually big celebrations. Some in Canada were cancelled by government bodies across the country...doesn't mean too much as the country is kind of cancelled in a way. They don’t want people too patriotic or flying the flag which was interpreted as supporting the Trucker’s Convoy during Covid. In the capital of Canada and some other places, at one point, it was illegal to fly the flag. I understand why we don’t want fireworks and I am fine with that due to fire dangers and more smoke in the air….. But a country to me is much more than a name, government and boundaries, it is the land and its life, a collective endeavor and feeling, at least that is what it signifies to me at this point in time.
“Weaving The Sacred Hoop”
My Country……
There are fresh wolf pup tracks on the beach along with a larger one, so I listen for them in the dawn when often they call each other. There are also baby deer tracks following beside its mother along with other adults. Baby deer, if they are still, are undetectable as they have no scent and they are well camouflaged in the bush. Some raccoons are up in the tree tops to avoid the wolves while a couple of mother raccoons, their tits hanging low from feeding their young, are walking along my window ledge looking for scraps.
I heard owl calls last night and I have sighted a snake or two lately, moving towards the frog pond where the tadpoles are starting to get legs and their parents are croaking in the night. That, along with scratching of the bats in their bat houses on my outside walls, as they return from a night of eating flying insects and the first calls of the birds in the awakening dawn are the sounds I love.
I watch as the moon grows into full, going down in an orange glow from the smoky fires happening over so much of the parched land. There has been hardly any rain for two months here, only one night, which was so refreshing. The salamanders are searching for moist habitat which is becoming rare. I water things as best I can and put out water for the birds and bees (I put marbles in a pan and add water so they don’t drown) and for the animals nearby.
The big old growth evergreens keep the forest cool but they are losing a lot of needles in the drought and strong winds. There is a lot of new growth on everything below the canopy as the Earth covers itself in protection. This Earth knows what is going on and its dance with the elements like earth, air, fire, water and clouds, in conjunction with sun, moon and planets are the real power.
We aren't in control, no matter how much some crazy people try to be. It's like Charlie Chaplin said..."You need power only when you want to do something harmful, otherwise love is enough to get everything done".
So in this land and country where we all live and survive in the best way we know how, appreciating the give and take, the life and death, the in-breath and the out-breath, the new buds and the dying old leaves, nurturing it all in the great Circle of Life, I am OK and content for the moment, wishing you well and be safe.
Have a great Full Moon and check out Venus, brightest it will be until 2031, in the evening sky.
